Akufo-Addo pays tribute to late Yaa-Naa Abukari II and Tolon Naa Major Sulemana Abubakari

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has paid a visit to the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi to personally express his deep condolences and profound sympathies to the Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya Naa Yakubu Abukari II, members of the Dagbon Traditional Council, chiefs, elders, and the people of Dagbon following the passing of the late Yaa-Naa Abukari II.
In a statement following his visit, the former President explained that when news of the death of the late Yaa-Naa Abukari II and the subsequent installation of the Regent, in accordance with Dagbon custom, was announced on July 13, 2026, he was out of the country.

He said this prevented him from personally participating in the customary ceremonies following the death of the Yaa-Naa, although he arranged for his customary condolences and greetings to be presented through his representatives.
Former President Akufo-Addo said his visit was also to honour the memory of his good friend, the late Yaa-Naa Abukari II, both in his personal capacity and as one proud to bear the title of Naa Abudani.

He recalled that the late Yaa-Naa graciously conferred the title on him during his historic installation as Yaa-Naa on January 25, 2019, in recognition of his contribution to efforts that facilitated reconciliation between the two great Royal Families of Dagbon—the Abudus and the Andanis.
According to the former President, the late Yaa-Naa Abukari II presided over a successful reign during which Dagbon experienced tremendous peace and rapid development.

“I remain deeply appreciative of the leadership of the late Yaa-Naa, and I shall continue to hold his memory in the highest regard,” he stated.
Akufo-Addo further expressed encouragement at the decision of the Regent and senior traditional authorities of Dagbon to uphold the Peace Accord, which has enshrined the time-tested traditions governing the selection of a worthy successor to Yaa-Naa Abukari II through the principle of rotation.

He stressed that the peace of Dagbon remains important not only to the people of Dagbon but also to the peace, stability and development of the entire northern sector and Ghana as a whole.
Meanwhile, the former President also visited Tolon on Friday, August 28, to mourn with the chiefs and people of the area following the passing of Tolon Naa Major (Rtd.) Sulemana Abubakari.

He noted that he shared a personal relationship with the late Tolon Naa for many years and remembered him fondly for his remarkable leadership and forthright character.
