The Centre for Active Learning and Integrated Development (CALID) has joined other Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in a two-day convening on mental health and disability to promote inclusion and address challenges confronting persons with mental health conditions and persons with disabilities.

The convening, organised jointly by BasicNeeds Ghana and ADD International under the Ghana Alliance for Mental Health and Development, formed part of activities to mark this year’s World Mental Health Day, observed on Saturday, October 10, under the theme, “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices. Real Change.”

In his welcome address, the Executive Director of BasicNeeds Ghana, Dr. Peter B. Yaro, said the gathering provided an opportunity for civil society organisations to deliberate on issues affecting persons with mental health conditions and persons with disabilities, while identifying practical measures to address their concerns.

Participants also received a presentation from ADD International on research findings on disability inclusion. The presentation highlighted the challenges faced by persons with disabilities and underscored the need for policies and interventions that promote equal opportunities, accessibility and full participation in society.

A panel discussion featuring persons with lived experience of mental illness and psychosocial disabilities further provided a platform for participants to hear firsthand accounts of the difficulties and discrimination they encounter. The discussion emphasised the importance of listening to affected individuals and incorporating their experiences into policies and programmes designed to improve their well-being.

At the end of the two-day convening, the Ghana Alliance for Mental Health and Development issued a joint communiqué to the media, outlining four priority areas requiring urgent attention from government, development partners, civil society organisations and the general public.

The priority areas include inclusive employment and livelihoods, sustainable funding for mental health services, ending stigma and discrimination, and promoting responsible media reporting and public accountability.

The communiqué is expected to draw attention to the need for coordinated action to strengthen mental health services, expand economic opportunities for persons with disabilities and ensure that their rights and concerns are adequately reflected in national development efforts.

The convening forms part of broader efforts to raise awareness about mental health and disability inclusion, while amplifying the voices of persons with lived experience and encouraging meaningful action towards a more inclusive society.
