Fire outbreak hits Gushegu NTC ICT labs, as Regional fire command pushes for stations in Gushegu, Karaga
A fire outbreak at the ICT laboratory of the Non-Formal Education Training Centre (NTC) in Gushegu on Monday, August 17, 2026, has destroyed computers and other learning equipment, prompting renewed calls for improved fire emergency preparedness in the area.
Following the incident, the Northern Regional Fire Commander led a delegation to Gushegu to assess the extent of the damage and engage key stakeholders on measures to strengthen fire prevention and emergency response within the municipality.
As part of the visit, the delegation met with the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Hafiz, the Municipal Coordinator and members of the Municipal Assembly. Discussions focused largely on the urgent need to establish a fire station in Gushegu to ensure faster response to fire emergencies.
The Gushegu Municipal Assembly subsequently took the Fire Command team to inspect a parcel of land earmarked for the construction of a fire station. The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Hafiz, assured the delegation that the Assembly is committed to commencing work on the project before the end of the year.
The Regional Fire Command also visited the Karaga District Assembly, where the team was received by the Deputy Coordinating Director. The engagement focused on the need to establish a fire station in Karaga to serve the district and surrounding communities.
The Regional Fire Commander stressed that the establishment of fire stations in both Gushegu and Karaga would significantly reduce emergency response times and help protect lives, schools, public institutions and property from fire outbreaks.
Residents and school authorities in Gushegu have welcomed the Assembly’s commitment, expressing hope that work on the proposed fire station will begin as promised.
The latest incident has further highlighted the importance of strengthening fire safety infrastructure in underserved communities, particularly in areas where residents currently have to wait for emergency response teams to travel from distant locations.
Authorities and stakeholders are therefore being encouraged to expedite efforts to establish the proposed stations to ensure that Gushegu, Karaga and their surrounding communities are better equipped to respond to future fire emergencies.
