The Paramount chief of Lamashegu, Naa Mahama Iddrisu, has warned residents against improper waste disposal and urged them to take greater responsibility for maintaining a clean environment. The warning came during a community cleanup exercise organised in the community, the gateway to Tamale, to improve sanitation and rid the area of accumulated waste.

The exercise began at the Lamashegu Palace, passed through the market and other parts of the community, and ended at a refuse dump site at Zujun, a community within Lamashegu.

The site has been earmarked for the construction of a community health facility to provide basic healthcare services, including blood pressure checks and care for pregnant women and children.

The Lamashegu Naa described improper waste disposal as an attitudinal problem and said he would collaborate with the Assembly Member to provide a waste container for the community to help improve waste management.

Speaking to journalists, the chief said the cleanup was necessary to clear the site and create a clean environment ahead of the proposed health facility.

He appealed to residents to change their attitude towards sanitation and actively participate in future communal cleanup exercises.

The Assembly Member for the Nakpanzo Electoral Area, Mohammed Abdul Ganiyu, expressed optimism about plans to transform the refuse dumping site at Zujun into a health facility.

He explained that the land was not originally designated as a refuse dump but was identified as suitable for the proposed health facility following an assessment by government officials.

Meanwhile, a resident, Abubakari Hamida, said residents participated in the exercise to support the chief, whom they regard as both their grandfather and father.

He described the condition of the market as worrying and said the area urgently required regular cleaning and improved waste management to protect public health and restore the community’s appearance.
