The Gulkpegu Palace has cautioned media houses in Tamale against irresponsible reporting and commentary that could undermine peace and trigger conflict in the area. The warning was issued at the Gulkpegu Naa’s Palace, where elders of the palace addressed the media on behalf of the Gulkpegu Naa.
Speaking on behalf of the elders, the Secretary to the Gulkpegu Palace, Kpalung Zobogu Naa Rashad Mohammed, expressed concern over what he described as unprofessional conduct by some media practitioners, particularly in their handling of sensitive issues.
He urged journalists and media houses to exercise greater caution and responsibility, stressing that media platforms should not be used to inflame tensions or create divisions within the community.
Naa Rashad disclosed that the Traditional Authority would invite general managers and heads of programmes of media houses in Tamale to the palace for discussions on concerns surrounding media content and its potential impact on peace and stability.
He acknowledged that freedom of expression is guaranteed under Ghana’s democratic system but stressed that such freedom comes with corresponding responsibilities, especially when reports and commentaries have the potential to threaten public peace.
The Secretary further warned that media houses that persist in using their platforms to promote conflict rather than peace could face action from the Traditional Authority.
He said the Gulkpegu Traditional Authority could take measures, including moves to seek the closure of media houses in Tamale, if they continued what the palace considers irresponsible media practices.
The palace therefore called on media practitioners to uphold professional standards, verify information before publication and ensure that their reporting contributes to peace and development in the Tamale metropolis.
