The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly has commissioned a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compound at Kobilimahigu to improve access to essential healthcare services for residents in the community and surrounding areas.

The facility was commissioned by the Mayor of Tamale, Mohammed Abubakari Takoro, in the presence of the German Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Frederik Landshöft, and other stakeholders.

The CHPS compound is expected to serve a population of approximately 8,461 people who previously had to travel several kilometres to access basic healthcare services.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Mayor said the facility would help address the challenges faced by pregnant women, children, the elderly and other residents who require timely access to healthcare.

He said the facility would provide services including antenatal and postnatal care, immunisation, child welfare services, treatment of common illnesses, health education, family planning, disease surveillance and emergency referrals.

Mr. Takoro expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama and his government for their commitment to expanding access to essential services, as well as the Government and people of Germany, through KfW and GIZ, for their financial, technical and institutional support.

He also acknowledged the contribution of the Ghana Health Service, Northern Regional Coordinating Council, Tamale Metropolitan Health Directorate, traditional authorities, community leaders, contractors and residents of Kobilimahigu towards the completion of the project.

The Mayor said the CHPS compound was more than an infrastructure project, describing it as a symbol of hope, dignity and the collective commitment to ensuring that communities are not left behind in development.

He urged residents to take ownership of the facility, protect it and make full use of the services provided, while calling on health workers to serve the community with dedication, compassion and professionalism.

The commissioning forms part of efforts by the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly and its development partners to bring healthcare and other essential services closer to residents and improve the quality of life in underserved communities.
