The 2026 MTN Savannah Festival football gala has officially kicked off at the Nobisco Football Park in Tamale, with 16 teams competing for honours in the expanded tournament.

The competition, which commenced on Friday, September 18, 2026, is scheduled to run until October 3. The launch ceremony brought together officials of MTN Ghana, regional football executives and football enthusiasts from across the Northern Region.

Speaking to the media during the launch, MTN Area Sales Manager for the Northern Sector, Richard Asamane, said the tournament had been expanded from four to 16 teams to promote unity, strengthen community relations and contribute to local development through football.

He explained that the expanded competition would also provide an opportunity to identify promising football talents in the region and offer them a platform to develop their abilities and compete at higher levels.

Mr. Asamane further disclosed that several activities had been planned as part of the Savannah Festival celebrations. These include a music concert, a clean-up exercise, a health walk and health screening.

Some of the participating players commended MTN Ghana for the initiative, describing the tournament as an opportunity to promote football development and unearth young talents. They expressed gratitude to the telecommunications company and prayed for a successful and competitive tournament.

The 16 participating teams have been divided into four groups, with teams set to compete for a place in the subsequent stages of the tournament.

Group A: Kakpagyili, Tolon, Sabongida and Sanzirigu.

Group B: Poloya Fong, Sakasaka, Kanvilli and Dungu.

Group C: Aboabo, Nyohini, Bayanwaya and Shishegu.

Group D: Gumani, Zogbeli, Dagbandaba Fong and Lamashegu.
