Parliament pays to late Tolon Paramount Chief
The Parliament of Ghana has paid tribute to the late Paramount Chief of the Tolon Traditional Area, Naa Yab Tolon Naa Sulemana Abukari, popularly known as Major Sulemana, following his passing.
The tributes were made on the floor of Parliament after the First Deputy Minority Whip and Member of Parliament for Tolon, Hon. Habib Iddrisu, presented a statement to the House on the death of the revered traditional ruler.
Hon. Iddrisu described the late chief as a national hero, military veteran and a committed advocate for peace, justice and constitutional governance.
According to him, Naa Yab Tolon Naa Sulemana Abukari dedicated his life to serving his people, protecting the traditions of the Tolon Traditional Area and championing peace, justice and good governance.
He noted that the late chief’s traditional title, Toblan Kpemma, meaning “Commander of the Dagban Army,” reflected his courage, leadership and determination to stand against injustice, corruption and land grabbing.
Born in July 1943 at Tali, the late chief, Hon. Iddrisu said, remained committed to constitutional governance during Ghana’s political upheavals in 1979 and 1981. His principled stance, he noted, eventually led to his exile in 1982.
Members of Parliament from both sides of the House joined in expressing their condolences to the bereaved family, the Tolon Traditional Council and the people of Tolon, while acknowledging the late chief’s contributions to traditional leadership, national life and the promotion of peace and justice.
Meanwhile, Education Minister and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has also joined the people of the Tolon Traditional Area in mourning the passing of the Paramount Chief.
Hon. Haruna Iddrisu visited the Tolon Traditional Area to extend his condolences to the bereaved family, the traditional council and the people of Tolon following the death of the revered traditional ruler.
During the visit, the Education Minister expressed his sympathies to the bereaved family and the people of Tolon and subsequently signed the Book of Condolence in honour of the late chief.
He described the loss as deeply painful and prayed for strength, comfort and fortitude for the bereaved family, the traditional council and the entire Tolon community as they come to terms with the passing of the Paramount Chief.
The death of Naa Yab Tolon Naa Sulemana Abukari has triggered widespread mourning across Tolon, Dagbon and beyond, with tributes highlighting his contribution to traditional leadership, peace and national development.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Tolon Traditional Council and the bereaved family in due course.
