GCB Managing Director Engages Former MDs to Draw Lessons for the Bank’s Future

The Managing Director of GCB Bank, Alhaji Farihan Alhassan, has engaged several former Managing Directors of the Bank as part of efforts to learn from their experiences and draw lessons from the institution’s history.
Alhaji Alhassan said the engagements provided him with the opportunity to reflect on the contributions of previous leaders and understand how their decisions and initiatives helped shape GCB Bank into the institution it is today.
Among those he met was Mrs Helen Lokko, GCB’s first female Managing Director, who led the Bank from 1992 to 1997. Alhaji Alhassan described the meeting as particularly significant, highlighting Mrs Lokko’s role in breaking an important barrier for women in leadership.
He also met Mr W. P. Bray, who served as Managing Director from 1999 to 2001, and Mr Lawrence Newton Adu-Mante, who led the Bank from 2005 to 2010 after nearly 38 years of service to GCB.

Mr Adu-Mante’s tenure was marked by the opening of 23 new branches, branch networking, process re-engineering and the modernisation of key facilities.
Alhaji Alhassan further engaged Mr Ernest Mawuli Agbesi, who served as Managing Director from 2016 to 2017, and H. E. Anselm Ray Sowah, who led the Bank from 2017 to 2020.
During Mr Sowah’s tenure, GCB completed the integration of UT Bank and Capital Bank and introduced G-Money, among other major developments.
Reflecting on the engagements, Alhaji Alhassan said the meetings reinforced the importance of learning from leaders who had previously served the Bank.
He noted that each generation of leadership had contributed to an important chapter in GCB’s development and that the experiences and lessons of former Managing Directors remained valuable to the Bank’s future.
According to him, the visits were not merely about looking back at the Bank’s history but about carrying forward the lessons, experiences and foundations established by previous leaders to help shape the future direction of GCB Bank.
